Health, Safety, and Well-Being

Health, Safety, and Well-Being at Temple

Your health, safety, and well-being are priorities at Temple University. From medical care to campus security and mental health support, Temple provides resources to help you feel safe, supported, and ready to succeed during your time in Philadelphia.

Staying Healthy

Temple makes it easy for students to access the care they need, whether for everyday health or unexpected issues.

Health Insurance for International Students

All international students are required to have health insurance while studying in the U.S. Temple automatically enrolls students in the university’s health insurance plan, which covers doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions, and more. If you already have insurance that meets Temple’s requirements, you may request a waiver.

On-Campus Medical Services and Counseling

The Student Health Services Center provides routine check-ups, urgent care, vaccinations, and health education. In addition, the Tuttleman Counseling Center offers confidential counseling for individuals, couples, and groups. Services are free for students and can help you with stress, adjustment, or personal concerns.

Staying Safe

Temple is committed to creating a safe and secure campus environment so you can focus on your studies and enjoy your student life.

Campus Safety Measures

The university invests in extensive safety systems, including well-lit pathways, emergency phones, and 24/7 patrols. Residence halls are secure and require keycard access.

Security Resources and Blue Light System

Across campus, you’ll see Blue Light emergency phones that connect you directly to campus security with the push of a button. Temple also offers a walking escort program and FLIGHT - free shuttle services so you can travel safely at night.

All students are registered and signed up for TUAlert System which can provide alerts via mobile messaging and email.

We recommend students download TUSafe app. This mobile application provides important safety features, including emergency contacts, safety tips, and campus maps.

Working with Temple Police

The Temple University Police Department (TUPD) is one of the largest university police forces in the U.S. Officers work closely with students and staff, providing education on safety practices and maintaining a visible presence on campus. Many international students find their approachable style reassuring and helpful.
