Making the Most of your Academic Experience

Academics and Learning Beyond the Classroom

At Temple, learning goes beyond the classroom. You’ll find hands-on opportunities to apply your knowledge, explore your interests, and connect with experts who inspire you to think differently.

Research and Innovation Opportunities

Temple is a leading public research university, giving you opportunities to join faculty-led research projects. Whether in science labs, design studios, or community-based projects, you’ll gain experience that helps you grow academically and professionally.

Many students share their research at campus symposiums or publish their work in undergraduate journals, contributing to conversations that have local and global impact.

Connecting with Faculty

Professors at Temple are approachable, collaborative, and committed to student success. You’ll be encouraged to share ideas, ask questions, and take an active role in discussions. Many classes emphasize teamwork through group projects and presentations, giving you the chance to learn from classmates as well as faculty.

Take advantage of office hours to connect directly with professors—whether you’re seeking feedback, exploring new ideas, or looking for mentorship.

Tips for Talking with Professors

Office hours are designated times when professors are available to meet with students outside of class. Don't be nervous–it's normal (and expected!) to stop by.

Tips for Talking with Professors
  • Go with a goal: Think about what you would like to talk about in advance–maybe you want to ask about a lecture, get help with an assignment, or learn more about a topic that interests you.
  • Arrive prepared: Bring your notes or assignments, and write down a few questions. It shows that you have put thought into the conversation.
  • Be polite and confident: Knock before entering, greet your professor, and thank them for their time. You don't need to be formal–just respectful and friendly.
  • Ask questions and share ideas: Professors love when students are curious. You can ask about examples from class, how a topic connects to your major, or even how they got started in their field.
  • Don't worry about your English: Professors understand that many international students are learning in a second language. They will appreciate your effort to communicate and will meet you halfway.
  • Follow-up: If their advice helped, let them know! Sending a short thank-you email builds a good connection and might open doors to future opportunities.
